Really now? "Sorry, I didn't know you were retarded" can mean A) "Sorry, I didn't know you were mentally challenged" or B) "Sorry didn't know you were an idiot/asshole". If your only interpretation is B even though A is plausible (it is in this case even though you may argue he used it as kind of a pejorative before) you either really want to be argumentative or are, as I said, part of that particular problem.
