I’m super frustrated. My artwork got used in a video without the youtuber asking me for permission; it was a video with over a million hits and there was no link at all to any artist in the description. I recognized a couple of my friends’ art in there as well with no links… so I filed a copyright claim to get it removed. And now I’ve been contacted by the guy over it, but I’m still agitated because there was no credit to anyone else either, and he claims he tries hard to source images… but I saw no evidence of that.
I’m just so frustrated over this because he was complaining about it on his twitter like I was a bad guy when he didn’t ask permission in the first place. In his email he says he’s trying to stress the importance of fan works, but doesn’t that start by… knowing who the artists are who are making the art you rip off for your video? They’re so important you don’t even ask for permission, or credit? Or think that you should ask permission before crediting?
He was going on about how he wished that he would have been approached first before I made a claim on the video to get it removed… but how about he approaches the artist first before using the art? Why is it that the artist is labeled a bad guy then? That makes no sense. The video already has reached its peak of popularity (It was about TPP) and any benefit I could’ve had by being promoted on that particular piece is mostly gone to the wind now, so credit is a fucking moot point by now. It takes about a minute of reverse image searching to find it on dA, and it takes about 20 seconds to set up a link per artist in your video.
How can you really claim to be promoting fan artists and fan work when you fail to respect it in the most base way possible: by asking permission to use it?

Okay, I defended you on Twitter because it was wrong of him to post work without permission, no doubt about that, and I even think it was right of you take harsh action to send a message that it’s really unacceptable but now you’re just twisting the truth and outright lying to try to make yourself seem like more of a victim and Jwittz as some terrible person.
He never made you out to the bad guy. Plenty of his fans did, trust me, I know, I got plenty of grief for defending the action.
He was complaining about Youtube’s system of non-communication, and he recently just got done with Youtube taking down one of his videos for being ‘spam’ when it clearly wasn’t.
You have several good points, no doubt, but you’re being bitter and lying. He hurt your lively hood, I understand that, he should have understand that, but now you’re hurting his too by being a baby and purposefully taking your sweet time complaining about it instead of trying to resolve it like an adult, which he has. I’m wondering if he felt he needed to contact you on twitter because you were non-responsive elsewhere.
Just like how you took action as soon as you saw there was a problem because of your livelihood, he’s doing the same and you’re losing a lot of sympathy fast, despite the good points you have by how childish you’re acting about it.
What he did to you was in the past, but this strike on him is going to continue on his account for the future and continue to jeopardize his lively hood. If you decided to be an adult about this and ask him, I’m sure he’d even make a video about where he got fanart and that would rectify your problem of ‘TPP isn’t big now it’s run it’s course and the video already has 1 million views’.
You seem to just want this to be a problem for as long as you can have it be a problem now. Grow up.
Again, he should have reversed image search, maybe he didn’t know how, maybe the watermarks or signature was removed by reddit, but hindsight is always the wiser. He’s trying to handle this like a professional, mature adult. I suggest you do the same. Yeah, you’re frustrated, but so is he because you’re taking the root of throwing a tantrum instead of trying to think of solutions that will benefit you both.
