because mel would like to be able to sell merchandise of her own universe if she used BY-NC-SA, everyone else would have to use BY-NC-SA, and she couldn’t easily adopt anything as canon anyone else is free to upgrade from BY-SA to BY-NC-SA though, if my reading of the license is correct (IANAL)
