singular they is a hack, but is there a problem with it other than its being morphologically and syntactically plural such that you prefer e/em/eir? singular they is the only realistic candidate, but I admit it's not the best.

i seem to have a habit of stumbling upon sentences and phrases where singular-they sounds really awkward or outright misleading, and i sort of resent having to restructure what i’m saying to fit what is already a hack.

spivak pronouns are their own brand of awkward (hell if i know how to pronounce them in a way that doesn’t sound maximum hipster) but at least it’s unambiguous awkward?

singular/plural “you” is often mentioned as an analog but honestly when does that make a difference?  if you’re in a group and someone is addressing “you”, well, that still applies just as well to you individually.  it’s almost always singular or works just as well if the listener interprets it as such.

anyway i don’t care if anyone else uses singular-they but it acts as a pothole too often for me (and i have enough trouble making my drivel coherent)
