Not all of it is speculative; there are fragments of the original tales, passed down verbally and eventually recorded. Time has fractured them into various conflicting versions, but the common parts can be reasonably assumed to be accurate. I have also unearthed the occasional more recent report of a sighting or interaction with a mythological Pokémon, though such stories have usually become extremely vague by the time they reach my ears.
Of course, the best source is a real live specimen! I can only hope I have further opportunities to study the myths up close as I did with that Kyurem. It almost feels like cheating!
