Would you stop following your favorite content creator because of rumors that they are "an abuser"? To what extent do you sepparate the artist from the art? What about a michael jackson or chick fil a situation? Or how about that voice actor that personally was an asshole to one of your family members, let's say you really liked their work. What do?

perhaps a better question: at what point do someone’s sins become so bad that you don’t want to follow them any more?  because everyone probably does something you find distasteful, even if it’s very minor

and i have no idea.  i think the ultimate reason is different for everyone too.  some people stop supporting a creator as a deliberate boycott; some people just sort of drift away because they can’t see the creator’s work without being reminded and the association spoils it for them.

i don’t think i can really fault anyone for not giving up an artist they like because of something that artist did.  if you still think bill cosby is funny, well, okay, i get that.  you like zaush’s or wolfy nail’s art?  sure, they are still talented.  you don’t want anything to do with any of them?  that makes sense too.

i don’t know where i’m going with this, i feel sort of conflicted

exposing when people do super dickheaded things is useful and important sure.  but we, the social justice crowd (and especially tumblr’s large collection of well-meaning but easily-distracted teenagers) are a bit too eager to chew on gossip and a bit too eager to declare someone as trash — in other words, subhuman.

a bit too resistant to forgiving minor stuff, too.  not that abuse is minor!  but sometimes someone with the privilege of just never thinking about this stuff blurts out a dumb joke or whatever, and people get (rightfully) angry, but then there’s a lot of yelling, and the original person might have the very human reaction of getting defensive and doubling down and whatever, and now we have a big schism.  when it might have worked just as well to just go “hey this isn’t cool”.

i don’t understand directing rage right at a person.  if i’m annoyed about something i will maybe tweet or tumbl something snarky about it, to vent, to get my thoughts in order, to maybe hear what someone else thinks about it.  i don’t understand why people would tweet at someone and call them a cunt, or vomit into someone’s inbox as anon.  what does that do?  do you feel better?  is the world now a better place?  did you change anything?

far more often than i’d like this is done by people who i would otherwise agree with, too.  i get that you are angry but unless someone else came into your space to be a dick, why are you picking a fight?  subtweet to your heart’s content if you must.  be clever, be witty, be insightful, but don’t just be hostile.

i felt kinda ambivalent about the chick-fil-a boycotting.  (nb: they don’t exist out here.)  as i understand it, a charity founded by the same people who founded chick-fil-a had donated buckets of money to oppose LGBT causes, right?  (what a weird thing for a charity to do.)  that is like three hops away from the business itself, though.  when is the connection strong enough?  if steve ballmer eats at chick-fil-a, do you then boycott microsoft for supporting them?

corporations are way more complicated, because they’re big lumbering giants that just barely manage to act like they’re functioning as single whole units.  different departments might have conflicting goals, or even diametrically opposed politics.  if you boycott the whole company over what one side did, you hurt the other side too.  and yet, it’s all one big pool of money, so what else can you do

but then i guess people aren’t exactly simple either.  someone was spreading around some furry dude’s tweet where he said “yes i believe gay sex is a minor sin, less bad than lying” and asked some convention if they’re comfortable having him on staff.  and i’m like, so what?  i’m pretty sure the number of people who lie is way greater than the number of people who have gay sex, so that’s actually a fairly refreshing thing to read.  but we want to get him kicked out of a thing for it?

i have no real conclusion and forgot what the original question was but here are some words, enjoy
