what's wrong with version groups? i thought they made a lot of sense. although i'm drunk so my opinion probably isn't the most informed.

they make a lot of stuff clunky, they’re particularly weird if your first foray into the database is a search for just “platinum” (how is that a group?), and they add yet another different way to handle change over time

also most places that use version groups already have UI code for collapsing duplicated data, so version groups aren’t actually doing anything the website isn’t already doing as well; they just make the frontend’s job more complicated
